Barley Swine-NOT JUST PIG

Bryce Gilmore, who was named one of America's best new chefs for 2011 by Food & Wine magazine and is well-known for his food trailer, "Odd Duck," opened this wonderful restaurant last year. This restaurant has been written up in numerous food blogs and magazines and most recently tied for first place as Austin's best new restaurant according to Austin Monthly magazine. If this says anything, it tied for first place with Congress. Having been to both restaurants, Barley Swine is my favorite. It is a casual atmosphere with community seating. They also have a bar that overlooks the kitchen which is definitely the best seat in the house. Luckily we did not have to wait for a table since they do not take reservations. We got there at 6:30pm on a Friday night and got the last two seats available. It is not unheard of that a party of 4 could have a wait time of 2+ hours on a weekend night. If possible, go here with 2 and no more than 4 people. It is recommended that you order 2-3 small plates/person. I will share with you my favorite dishes but it is up to you to do your palate a favor and go to this restaurant!
Chickpea Fritters, Sesame Dressing, Sweet Potato
Scallops, Spicy Pork Cheek, Curried Sweet Potato, Raisin
(This was a standout for me)
Spiced Goat, Turnip, Goat Cheese Fodue, Greens
Grilled Gulf Shrimp, Beans, Roasted Peppers, Citrus
This was one of two daily specials and it was delightful. I love edible foam!
Grilled Duck Breast, Smoked Leg, Rice, Beets and Apple
This was the other daily special and it did not disappoint either.
Butternut Squash Ice Cream, Grilled Foie Gras, Sage Funnel Cake
This dessert was heavenly and I am still dreaming about it!
